Meet John Muthuri Kathure, 21st Graduation Ceremony Alumni Representative
An alumnus of Mount Kenya University 2013 class, a Lawyer and Currently, the Senior Program Officer at Article 19 an international Non- Governmental organization headquartered in United Kingdom.
Having Graduated with a bachelor of laws degree and leadership skills he gained while he served as MKUSA Secretary general at Nairobi Campus then, he chose his career niche to be a human rights advocate. Previously he se served as a legal Aid Officer at African Prisons Project, an organization that that supports education in the prison departments for staff and prisoners. Muthuri heads the Article 19’s Civic Space Program in East Africa. He leads human rights advocacy at the national and international level including making oral and written submission to continental and international human rights mechanism.
Muthuri has worked on different human rights issues including LGBTIQ+, prisoners, women, refugees and generally expansion of Civic Space. As a result of his commitment to protecting and promoting Human Rights, he was selected to the International Visitors Leadership Program by the US Department of State and the US Embassy Nairobi in 2019, honored as one of the 14 Men of Amnesty by Amnesty International Kenya in 2020. This gave him an opportunity to present a statement at the UN Human Rights Council in regards to Kenya’s adoption of its Universal Periodic Review. In 2021 he was further shortlisted for top 35 under 35 award in Kenya
He is currently running projects to destigmatize protest in Nairobi, Nakuru and Kisumu as well as countering negative narratives in Kisumu and Mombasa counties. He is also support the Mombasa County in the passage of the Gender Mainstreaming Policy.
Through his work Muthuri provides human support to grass root movements through capacity, policy review and grant making. Through his regular column in the dailies and also opportunities on TV stations he continues to lend voice on human rights issues affecting the society. He has used his role at Article 19 to advocate for an expansive civic space.
Currently he is pursuing Masters of Arts in Project planning and management at Mount Kenya University.
In our alumni networking groups headed supported by the Directorate of Career and Alumni Services, Muthuri has mentored young graduates and his colleagues in the civic space. He has always provided information on attachment, internship and job opportunities via WhatsApp group and directly to the Office of the Director, Career and Alumni Services
Although he is on a full time employment he has established FloKat Cleaners Limited. The company provides domestic and commercial cleaning services in Nairobi and its environs and has employed 10 Employees
