Alumni Men’s Webinar: Navigating Identity: Exploring faith, Culture and Life Beyond Campus

Simon Mbuvi recently led a compelling men’s webinar titled “Navigating Identity: Exploring Faith, Culture, and Life Beyond Campus,” hosted by the Mount Kenya University Alumni Department. The virtual session attracted 50 male alumni, bringing together young professionals and recent graduates for an enriching conversation on life after university. Mbuvi focused on the core themes of identity and purpose, offering insights to help the attendees navigate the transition from campus life to the broader world with confidence and clarity.

In his presentation, Mbuvi emphasized that identity should be viewed holistically, rather than as separate parts faith, culture, and personal ambition. He encouraged the participants to embrace their spiritual foundations and cultural roots as key elements in defining who they are. Faith, he noted, serves as a compass in an often-confusing world, while one’s cultural background offers a sense of belonging and a framework for moral grounding.

Addressing the subject of purpose, Mbuvi urged alumni to live with intentionality and direction. Purpose, he explained, is not something stumbled upon by chance, but something cultivated through deep reflection, mentorship, service, and alignment with personal values. He introduced four key elements of discovering purpose:

  1. Abilities – recognizing and developing your God-given gifts and talents,
  2. Needs – identifying the pressing needs around you that your abilities can help solve,
  3. Conscience – listening to your inner moral compass,
  4. Passion – following the areas that spark energy and drive in your life, and

Mbuvi also addressed the challenges that come with post-campus life, particularly the pressures of conformity, identity crisis, and isolation in professional spaces. He encouraged the men to stay authentic, live out their faith in the workplace, and surround themselves with supportive male communities that inspire growth and accountability.

Major Key Takeaways from the Webinar:

  • Identity is holistic – Embrace your faith, culture, and values as interconnected parts of who you are.
  • Purpose must be intentional – Discovering your life mission requires deliberate action, not passive waiting.
  • Faith and culture provide grounding – They offer clarity in decision-making and resilience in challenging environments.
  • Life beyond campus can be isolating—build strong, supportive communities – Seek accountability, mentorship, and brotherhood.
  • Live authentically – Be consistent with your values in all areas of life, including your career and relationships.

In his conclusion, Mbuvi issued a powerful call to action urging the attendees to embrace their true selves, lean on their faith, honor their culture, and live purposefully. The webinar was not only a space for reflection but also a source of motivation, leaving the alumni’s inspired to face the world beyond campus with renewed clarity and courage.
