Alumni Mental Health Month Part Two :Depression and Anxiety Management
As part of Mental Health Awareness Month, the Alumni Directorate hosted a highly informative session on Depression and Anxiety Management, attracting 243 participants, including students and alumni. The session was facilitated by Agnes Gichuhi, a certified mental health practitioner, and Joan Kirera, a clinical psychologist with over a decade of experience supporting individuals with emotional and psychological well-being.

The speakers addressed the growing concern around mental health, emphasizing that depression and anxiety are among the most common yet misunderstood conditions, especially among young adults and professionals. They began by distinguishing between normal stress, clinical anxiety, and major depressive disorder, encouraging attendees to recognize warning signs early.
Key Takeaways:
- Symptoms of Depression and Anxiety: These include persistent sadness, lack of energy, irritability, sleep disturbances, excessive worry, and social withdrawal.
- Triggers and Risk Factors: Ranging from academic pressure and unemployment to social media overload and unresolved trauma.
- Coping Strategies:
- Routine and Structure: Participants were advised to maintain a consistent daily routine that includes rest, exercise, and time for reflection.
- Seeking Help: The importance of reaching out for professional support rather than suffering in silence was emphasized.
- Mindfulness Practices: Joan guided the attendees through a short breathing exercise to demonstrate how mindfulness can calm the nervous system and reduce anxiety.
- Journaling and Positive Affirmations: Agnes highlighted the value of expressive writing and reinforcing self-worth through affirmations.
The session created a safe, supportive space for participants to ask questions and reflect on their own mental health journeys. The speakers also provided a resource list of local counseling centers and helplines, reinforcing the message that help is available and healing is possible.
Participants were encouraged to continue conversations around mental wellness and look forward to additional support sessions organized by the Alumni Directorate. Feedback indicated a strong interest in follow-up events focusing on building resilience, navigating grief, and mental health in the workplace.
