Beyond the Degree: Empowering Women to Thrive Professionally

In celebration of International Women’s Day 2026, Thika Campus hosted a vibrant and inspiring Alumni–Students Mentorship Forum dedicated to empowering female students to navigate life beyond academia. Held on Friday, March 13th, the forum brought together accomplished alumnae and aspiring students under the theme: “Beyond the Degree: Thriving as a Woman Professional.”

The event marked the beginning of a transformative mentorship journey, creating a platform for meaningful engagement, knowledge sharing, and the cultivation of lifelong professional relationships between alumni and students.

The highlight of the forum was a powerful keynote address by Ms. Irene Nyaga, who delivered an engaging and thought-provoking session centered on what it truly means to thrive not just survive in today’s professional landscape.

Key Insights from the Keynote Address

1. Thriving Starts with Identity & Self-Belief
Ms. Nyaga emphasized that success begins from within. Understanding one’s identity and cultivating self-belief are foundational to unlocking potential and confidently navigating career paths.

2. A Mindset Shift: From Employment to Empowerment
Encouraging a shift in perspective, she challenged students to move from “Who can employ me?” to “Who can I employ?” This call to action underscored the importance of value creation, reminding participants that growth comes from giving, we give to gain.

3. Courage and Audacity Matter
In a competitive world, qualifications alone are not enough. The keynote speaker highlighted that opportunities often favor those who are bold, courageous, and willing to take risks. Thriving requires stepping forward with confidence and audacity.

4. Build Strategic Networks Early
Students were urged to begin building meaningful and strategic networks while still in university. Reinforcing the idea that “your network is your net worth,” Ms. Nyaga encouraged participants to intentionally cultivate relationships that support their personal and professional growth.

5. Strengthen Spiritual and Emotional Resilience
Recognizing the complexities of life beyond the classroom, she stressed the need for strong spiritual and emotional grounding. These inner strengths are critical for resilience, decision-making, and overall well-being.

6. Balance Purpose, Impact, and Profit
Participants were reminded that true fulfillment lies in aligning passion with purpose while also considering sustainability. Striking a balance between impact and profitability ensures both personal satisfaction and long-term success.

7. Lift Others as You Rise
In a powerful closing message, Ms. Nyaga called on women to support and uplift one another. Success is more meaningful when shared, and collective empowerment creates lasting change.

A Step Toward Lasting Mentorship

The forum not only inspired but also reinforced the importance of mentorship among women. Students were encouraged to actively seek out “sister mentors” within the alumni network women who can guide, support, and walk with them through their professional journeys.

As the first of many such engagements, the event set a strong foundation for a sustained mentorship culture that bridges the gap between university life and the professional world.

Looking Ahead

The success of this forum signals a promising future for alumni-student engagement initiatives. By fostering mentorship, encouraging bold thinking, and nurturing resilience, the university continues to shape not just graduates but empowered, purpose-driven women ready to thrive beyond their degrees.
